How to check a GIT report

Verify a GIT report number on the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand's own site, spot a fake, and see what a genuine report still can't prove.

To check a GIT report, open the Report Verification page on the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand's website, git.or.th, type the GIT number printed on the report and press Result. If the report exists, GIT shows the record it holds — identification, weight, measurements, colour, and origin and treatments where tested — with a PDF to download. That proves GIT issued the report. It does not prove the stone in your hand is the one GIT tested.

About GIT and its reports

The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) runs its gem testing laboratory on Silom Road in Bangkok. GIT states that the lab is ISO/IEC 17025 certified and recognised by CIBJO, and it is one of the seven labs on the Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee (LMHC), which agrees shared wording for treatments and varieties.

Its gemstone documents include:

  • Full Gem Identification Report — identification, weight, proportions and a clear description, with a digital colour photograph; ruby and sapphire reports can carry colour grading.
  • Gem Identification Mini Report — a shorter format with the essentials and a photo.
  • Separate reports for jade, pearls, diamonds and jewellery.

GIT says its Full Gem Identification Report, like its jade, pearl and jewellery reports, is printed on special paper with 3D images and sealed with a hologram depicting the Royal Palace to prevent counterfeiting; the Mini Report is printed on matt art paper.

How the online check works

  1. 1.
Type the address yourself. Go to git.or.th and open Report Verification. The page works in English and Thai.
  2. 2.
Enter the GIT number. Type it exactly as printed. The example formats on the page start with a letter such as A, G or J.
  3. 3.
Press Result. If the number exists, GIT shows a record with the report number and date, the identification result, measurements, weight, shape, cut, colour, origin, treatments and comments — and, for jewellery, gold content. A PDF of the report can be downloaded.
  4. 4.
Compare. Every field should match the paper, and the weight and measurements should fit the stone.

Know the limits GIT sets out on the same page (as of October 2026):

  • the online check covers items submitted from 1 July 2014;
  • after a recent system upgrade, details of reports issued before 2024 may appear incomplete;
  • GIT describes the result as "preliminary data intended solely to confirm the issuance of a report".

For older reports, missing details or anything that looks wrong, GIT asks you to contact it directly or email [email protected]. Use the contact details on git.or.th, not ones printed on the paperwork you were handed.

If the check finds nothing

Re-type the number first; a missing letter or a transposed digit is the usual cause. Then look at the date on the report: anything submitted before July 2014 will not appear online at all. If the report should be there and isn't, treat it as unconfirmed. Explanations offered by the seller — a lab backlog, a "new system", a report "still being processed" — are not a substitute for an answer from GIT.

Signs of an altered or fake GIT report

  • No record, or different data. Stop and contact GIT before any money moves.
  • A missing or damaged hologram, or plain paper. GIT's full reports use special paper and a sealed Royal Palace hologram; the Mini Report is printed on matt art paper, so check which report you hold.
  • A weight or measurements that do not fit the stone. A re-cut stone weighs less; a swapped stone rarely matches at all.
  • A QR code or link that opens anything other than git.or.th. In 2018 a Bangkok laboratory warned that forged copies of its reports carried working QR codes leading to a lookalike website one letter away from its real address. Type the address yourself.
  • Only a photo or a PDF. Ask to see the original paper, then confirm it with GIT.
  • A report from before July 2014. The online check cannot confirm it; only GIT can.

What a GIT report proves — and what it doesn't

A genuine GIT report provesIt does not prove
GIT examined a stone and recorded these results on that dateThat the stone in your hand is that stone
The identification, treatments and, where tested, origin GIT foundThat nothing has changed since — re-cutting, new filler, further treatment
That the paper is GIT's, once confirmed with the labA value or price

The gap in the right-hand column is closed only by checking the stone itself against the report: weight, measurements, the photograph, and ideally a re-examination by the lab. If you are buying a significant stone, ask GIT how it can re-examine a stone presented with its report.

Reading GIT's treatment wording

Because GIT is an LMHC lab, its reports follow the committee's shared terms. Three are worth knowing:

  • Heating is reported as indications of heating, or no indications of heating. Heat is common and accepted in ruby and sapphire, but it must be stated.
  • Glass in fractures is reported as a glass filler, graded minor, moderate or significant. Where pieces of corundum are bound together by glass, the shared wording calls the item a manufactured product, or corundum with glass.
  • Padparadscha is a name reserved for pinkish orange to orangey pink sapphire whose colour stays in that range through a stability test; a stone whose colour shifts out of it, for example towards pink, is reported as a pink or fancy sapphire instead.

Origin, where given, is the lab's expert opinion.

Before you pay

  • Ask to hold the original report, and check the hologram and paper.
  • Look the GIT number up yourself on git.or.th, and compare every field.
  • Weigh the stone on a scale you trust, measure it, and compare it with the photograph.
  • If the report predates July 2014 or the online record is incomplete, get written confirmation from GIT.
  • A report shown only on a phone, or one you are not allowed to take away and check, is not one to rely on yet.

What Everystone does about it

A free Registry record keeps a stone's details and its GIT report number in one place you can share, and once the report number is confirmed with GIT, the record says so. Matching that report to the physical stone is what an Everystone Passport adds: the report describes a stone, the passport shows it is this one. When you buy through the shop, every lot says how far it has been checked, from seller-declared to full verification, and your payment is held until you confirm the stone. See how it works.

Questions

How do I verify a GIT report online?

Open the Report Verification page on git.or.th, type the GIT number printed on the report and press Result. If the report exists, GIT shows its stored data and offers a PDF. Compare every field with the paper and with the stone.

Why can't I find my GIT report online?

The online check covers items submitted from 1 July 2014, and, as of October 2026, GIT notes that details of reports issued before 2024 may appear incomplete after a system upgrade. A typing error in the number is the other common cause. If it still fails, contact GIT directly or email [email protected] before you rely on the report.

What does a GIT report include?

A Full Gem Identification Report gives the identification, weight, measurements and a description with a digital colour photograph; ruby and sapphire reports can add colour grading. Origin and treatment findings appear where they were tested. GIT also issues a shorter Gem Identification Mini Report and separate reports for jade, pearls, diamonds and jewellery.

Does a verified GIT report prove my stone is the one tested?

No. The online check confirms that GIT issued a report with that number and those findings. Whether the stone in front of you is the stone GIT examined needs a physical check against the report, ideally by the lab itself.
